LuxTurrim5G partner in spotlight
Vaisala is a global leader in weather, environmental, and industrial measurements. Building on over 80 years of experience, Vaisala provides observations for a better world, with space-proof technology even exploring Mars and beyond.
Vaisala’s precise weather and environmental data as well as accurate air quality solutions give smart cities real-time insights to improve quality of life. Vaisala’s state-of-the-art air quality monitoring sensors, digital street services, and efficient weather modeling for drone transport help drive quick decision-making. This type of informational advantage gives smart cities the real-time situational awareness needed to improve people’s quality of life and optimize various operations in cities.
Currently available reference-grade air quality monitoring stations provide accurate data, but the networks are sparse. Vaisala’s compact air quality sensors make it possible to complement the existing measurements and build dense air quality networks. Sensors can also be used as a cost-effective standalone solution for smaller cities.
“In the LuxTurrin5G ecosystem, we have researched how our instruments can be integrated to smart poles, and developed the required gateway for disseminating information on air quality. The objective has been to increase our understanding of how to integrate our sensors into smart city environment as well as determining use cases to increase safety what comes to weather conditions,” says Tommi Roman, Head of Emerging Business Development, Weather and Environment business area, Vaisala.
“We are delighted to continue the productive collaboration with Nokia and the research consortium to roll out dense observation networks and develop applications to create healthy, resilient and efficient urban environments,” Roman continues.
One of the most recent air quality pilot projects provides air quality information in a new and innovative way to selected public transport shelters in Helsinki. The project partners JCDecaux Finland, Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY), and Vaisala together with Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and Helsinki City Transport (HKL) provide air quality information to the citizens of Helsinki. Air quality information is displayed at two public transport stops in Helsinki until the end of 2021: tram stop at Lasipalatsi and bus stop in Hakaniemi. With this air quality pilot project, Vaisala together with the project partners aim to enhance people’s understanding of air quality at that location.
At its heart, having a smart city means increasing efficiency, productivity and improving citizens' wellbeing by using technology. To make it work, a smart city plan includes innovation, participation, collaboration and coordination between all stakeholders, especially residents. Smart technology includes digital solutions that integrate sensors, data and IT systems to solve real challenges and create sustainable cities that improve quality of life.
