Jaume Benseny completes doctoral studies on Luxturrim5G techno-economic aspects

Jaume Benseny has completed his doctoral degree in Network Economics at Aalto University, studying how LuxTurrim5G technologies can enable urban 5G connectivity and related smart city services.

Jaume conducted his research in the “Business models and Regulation“ work package of the Neutral Host Pilot Project, together with other research organizations and TRAFICOM. He additionally collaborated with industrial partners of the LuxTurrim5G+ project to understand the developed technology and emerging market needs.

Jaume conducted a three-part techno-economic analysis, obtaining practical, managerial, and theoretical results in the fields of service adoption, technology evaluation, and business administration. Results have been documented through seven research articles, presented to conference proceedings and journals, two of which remain under review.

In the first part, traffic demand was forecasted for the Helsinki city center, considering 11 device types and the effect of government regulation. Results suggest that mmWave small cells may be needed around 2025, although additional mid-band spectrum availability may delay this need.

In the second part, deployment costs for 5G smart pole networks were modeled, using different pole configurations and deployment structures. Costs were estimated for different urban needs with cost reduction potential associated with prototype improvement.

In the third part, novel market structures were proposed for local connectivity and data markets. Neutral connectivity and data operators were identified as new actors with the potential to accelerate the construction of network and cloud infrastructure as well as new service adoption.

The research was supervised by Professor Heikki Hämmäinen from the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering, Department of Communications and Networking (COMNET).

Jaume Benseny is a part-time Post-Doctoral researcher at the Department of Communications and Networking at Aalto University in Finland. He received his D.Sc. in Network Economics in 2021 and M.Sc. in Communications Ecosystem in 2016, both from Aalto University. He obtained his degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Technical University of Catalonia (ETSETB-UPC) in 2006. He worked at the Internet research centre I2CAT for 5 years. His research interests include the techno-economic feasibility of wireless technologies, the diffusion of wireless services, and operator business. Jaume is about to start working at Elisa as Data Scientist.
