LuxTurrim5G partner in spotlight
Tehomet is the largest manufacturer of custom steel and wooden light poles in the Nordics. The latest LuxTurrim5G smart poles, manufactured in Kangasniemi Finland, are currently prepared to be installed in Kera, Espoo as part of the LuxTurrim5G test network.
Tehomet Group is a Finnish SME company owned by the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of metal poles, Valmont Industries, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Tehomet Group has been steadily growing and in 2018 posted a 16.3 million euro turnover with 2.45 million euro operating result. The company employs about 65 persons.
LuxTurrim5G has benefited from Tehomet’s expertise in steel light poles and their manufacturing. During the one year that Tehomet has been a partner, the company has already designed several versions of the LuxTurrim5G smart pole and is currently designing the next generation smart pole that is planned to be used in the Kera area of Espoo that will be built in the 2020s.
“The key is to get as much of the equipment inside the smart poles to make them look clean and simple” says Design Manager Sami Huuskonen.
The next generation design will be highly modular enabling integration of different compositions of sensors and providing various services depending on the needed pole configuration. The latest design is not just a single smart pole but a family of smart poles each meant for different areas like park, street, road or highway.
“Even though we currently have to use quite heavy structures to incorporate all the equipment and make some compromises in the design, we have to remember that technology develops quickly and in a few years the components will be smaller”, Sami continues.
One key aspect is that the smart pole product family can be designed in such way that it becomes competitive on the global market and companies like Tehomet can offer their products and services outside the pilot area in Kera.
“The global potential for smart pole networks is huge and this project can open us completely new opportunities”, comments CEO of Tehomet Jarkko Kettunen.
